Alan In general, whenever she wrote things, she would just perform them that day. She would often invite fans up from the audience to hold up the lyrics for her because she hadn’t even memorized them yet. She’s really gutsy in that way. I admire that about her—that she’s really willing to go out there and try a new song on an audience. And I think that’s one of the things that makes her so fascinating to see live. You never really know what she may end up playing on any given night.

Doug She would come in with an idea like at sound check. She wrote the songs. And as far as arrangements go, she would pretty much have the arrangements already done.

Trey She knows inherently what’s going to make a song better, and it’s all in her head. She’s like a great composer. They know, before they put it on paper, how it’s going to sound. And that’s what separates the great songwriters from everyone else, I think.

Brady She’ll just come busting out playing, or she’ll try something new or write something and play it at a gig. That’s always hip ‘cause, you know, the show never gets boring that way. It’s like, “I got a new song.” We do it at sound check, run over it and then do it on the gig that night.
